The Star Beast - A Finished Quilt

I've been waiting so frigging long to get some photos of this quilt for you, I swear it has been raining non-stop for over a week now. It was sunny yesterday, precisely between the hours of 9am-5pm, and it started raining again when I was on my way home from work. Typical.

So, after attempting to take photo's of this quilt on no less than 5 separate occasions, this is what I have. Maybe in the summer I will get her out for a do-over. And of course, anyone coming to the Fat Quarterly Retreat can meet her in person :o) But for now, these will do just fine.

The Star Beast - A Brit Bee Quilt

This quilt is the culmination of 6 months of work, by 13 different ladies, from 3 different countries. And I am so chuffing pleased with it... It just makes me smile.

The Star Beast - A Brit Bee Quilt
Worst quilt picture ever, I know. But look at my dad, standing on a wall, in his slippers, in the rain , for me... ♥ him
It started here, in October '11, with an inspiration mosaic of stars, and a stack of Denyse Schmidt's Hope Valley.11 smaller stacks of Hope Valley were sent out to far flung corners of the UK, where my girls worked their magic, and sent them back on their way.

I made a couple more stars and then pieced the top. I had a bit of a wobble while I was making it, and decided to send it out to be quilted. I'd never done that before, but I really wanted to love this quilt, and I was working myself up into quite a stress thinking about how to quilt it.

As it turns out, Long Armed Chris is some sort of quilting goddess! I knew I wanted a geometric pattern, like the Baptist Fan... but I was also toying with the idea of some sort of loopy star or flower design. Hey presto, Baptist Fans WITH flowers. How awesome is this???

I LOVE the quilting. The quilting just makes it.

I pieced the leftovers from the blocks into a long strip for the back to include all of our "siggy blocks", and used the very last pieces to make a scrappy binding.

Which I love.

I'm all about the scrappy binding recently. Which is weird, because I never used to like them that much.

I may have said it before a million times, but THIS is my new favourite quilt. Oh yes it is.

  4. I LOVE it! It is sooo beautiful. That long arm quilting was well worth it. I may have to think about that for any big quilts that I think I might struggle with.

  11. I don't blame you, this quilt looks pretty awesome! The quilting looks familiar, I think someone else posted a quilt quilted by Chris with the same type of flowers, not sure about the fans. Anyway... The shots are pretty nice, overcast is actually better to take good photos, so don't be upset! Thanks so much for sharing!

  23. What a wonderful group effort! I love the name along with the quilting (a Heinlein fan also). I've never thought about working flowers, or anything else, into the standard Baptist Fan quilting! What a great idea! May have to borrow this the next time I do some hand quilting of those fans :) I can see why this is your favorite.

  25. Oh I had a little pang in my chest when I saw your dad on the wall - made me think of my dad as that`s just what he would have done. *sniff* But anyway, that is one very very special quilt. A real heirloom isn`t it? The colours, the design, the quilting. Very very special.

  37. I love this quilt, it is so gorgeous...I am contemplating making a star quilt for a bee and was wondering how much fabric you sent to each person since from the looks of it, you allowed each person to choose what type of block to send to you. Thanks! =)
