Just indulge me for a little while, K? ;-)
I finished my Giant Granny Square Quilt! Yey! Go me! (And go Long Arm Chris too, because she quilted it!)
This is easily the biggest quilt I have ever made. Its a little bit excessive really. But Giant Granny did what Giant Granny wanted. And she wanted to be a reeeeeeaaaaallly big quilt.
I had been thinking for a while about what to do with my many many rainbow charm squares. I think I'd been in 3 or 4 different rainbow charm swaps, because you know, who can resist a good rainbow charm swap?! And then it dawned on me I should probably actually have a plan in mind for them.
I think it was KJ who suggested giant granny squares. Because she's all clever like that. And what a clever idea it was?! The blocks came together so easily and so quick, it was actually a lot of fun to make. I organised my charms into a colour wheel, weeded out some of the more horrific ones, then made sets for each block.
The background is Weave in Coal, from Lu's first line, Summersville, which you can still get in Lucie's etsy shop. Btw peeps... have you seen the preview of the second summersville collection??? Its got purples in! I like to think Lu did that just for me.
I think this print works great as the background because it ties everything together. Yes, the colours don't pop as much as they would had they been against a white, but I really didn't want to go with white. I figured there was enough colour in there already so it probably needed toning down somewhat ;o)
From a distance, it just looks like a semi solid grey - but close up you can really see the pattern. I love the way the grid changes direction where the sashing meets the bias cut triangles.
Oh yeah, my Dad took that picture of me when I was taking that picture of the quilt. Thanks Dad.
And the quilting? Well, that's one of the best parts I think. I've been obsessed, OBSESSED, with bubble quilting for like, a couple of years. I wanted it on my Brit Bee Quilt, but it wouldn't have suited the pattern as much as the baptist fans did. So yeah, I asked Chris to do bubbles on this one, and she did them good!
I LOVE how they look on the back. The orange thread on the Aqua Dotties backing. Swoon! I was so worried that they would make the top look crazier than it already is, but they actually don't stand out as much as I thought.
I can't wait till Winter when the nights are cool enough to have it on my bed! I had a test snuggle on the sofa last week and I think its gonna be a good one :o)

Love the snap of you photographing the quilt - the lengths we go to for our blogs! The quilt looks amazing, the background fabric adds a bit of difference.
ReplyDeletethat rocks! I love everything about it :-D
ReplyDeleteWow, it looks absolutely fanbulous. I love the colours and the bubble quilting is stunning: finishes it off perfectly!
ReplyDeleteGreat post.
ReplyDeleteLovely quilt.
Was the sky really that blue?!
Fab way to use those charms, they make great giant grannies! I have such a huge pile from previous swaps I'm really going to have to suck it up and use them soon...
ReplyDeletePS, have you chosen your classes for Tuesday's frenzy yet?
Gorguss!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it!! I am so jealous. I want to be able to make BIG quilts. Heck, I want to be able to make little ones! I love the bubble quilting. I have a feeling when I do my first ever big quilt I will be sending it Long Arm Chris rather than wrestling with my little machine. It's hard enough just doing basic straight line quilting with a walking foot on a titchy baby quilt. I dread to think how difficult doing a big assed quilt like that would be on a domestic machine.
ReplyDeleteIt's just wonderful! I like the background fabric because the little blanket my grandma crocheted for me had dark edges to the grannie squares, so I'm always more partial to darker tones. You did a great job!
ReplyDeleteVery nice! Sure looks like a big one. You are right to be "right cuffed"
ReplyDeleteWell I was going for my best English accent then and meant chuffed... But auto correct had other ideas :)
ReplyDeleteOh Lauli its fabulous! The weave really makes it, dunnit? Love the quilting too :-) Well done you.
ReplyDeleteI love this so much I am tempted to copy it with my charms! Absolutely amazing job you!!
ReplyDeleteOh, it's perfect!

ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful Laura, one of my favourite quilts of the year!
ReplyDeleteLooks like your day is calling for a cuddle with the quilt in that hammock. That's what I'd be doing! Love it! :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE IT Laura!!!
ReplyDeleteThe colours you have chosen give a real vintage feel.
I'm thinking of sharing some 'fav quilts' on my blog, wanna pop over when I've sorted it out? I wanted to call it sew and tell, but after an easy search, I'm not being original it seems, so it may be called 'in search of the perfect quilt'

This quilt is beautiful! I love the array of colours! I've been following your blog for just over a year now (you're from my neck of the woods too!) and I've just finished a quilt inspired by the hexagonal pattern in your banner pic. I'll be making a post about it soon! x
ReplyDeleteP.S Have just added a photo of a quilt with the hexagonal pattern!
DeleteStunning quilt LJ! Brilliant pics too! Love the bubbles and the binding and all of it! Jxo
ReplyDeleteWow what a stunning quilt!! Such a great choice for the background colour, white can sometimes be overused. Awesome idea to use up the rainbow charms, I'm waiting for a swap to finish so I can get mine. The Giant grannies was a great choice of block, no extreme cutting involved. =D
ReplyDeleteLooks like a beautiful day in Leicestershire! I adore your quilt and well, everything about it though missing your dad in his slippers shot
ReplyDeleteI seriously love all of it. The large grannies look beautiful, your pictures are gorgeous, and the quilting is so great!

ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful quilt!! The quilting is perfect and I love the backing fabric you chose. Such a smart way to use up all those charms!
ReplyDeleteAmazing! I was actually looking for the name of the Summerville fabric that you used! Now I know! I am sure I take similar options to take pictures, as well as weird set up...
ReplyDeleteWow! This is one really big, Beautiful quilt. I could kick myself for not joining that quilt along.
ReplyDeleteLove the picture of you taking a picture.
My Aurifil threads arrived in the mail today. Yah! They are beautiful. I have always wanted to try Aurifil. Thank you : )

ReplyDeleteBeen messing with Google+. Can you tell me if I have returned to non-reply please?
ReplyDeleteit is spectacularly beautiful, Laura!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the background on your quilt!! I've been admiring Granny Square quilts all over the internet but have been scared at the white backgrounds. (White and I don't get along very well). But your background is genius!
ReplyDeleteI love the background, I would have never thought to choose that!
ReplyDeleteA granny squares quilt is on my short list. Great quilting, too!
