Happy Scrappy New Years!

I hope you all had a fabulous Christmas and New Years! I had the most wonderful relaxing time with family over Christmas, mostly just nibbling on yummies whilst watching movies and knitting. It was bliss. Then for New Years, we headed down south to Cornwall for a big family party. So.much.fun.

I tried to blog while I was there, I really did, but it just wasn't happening. So... a couple of days late and perhaps a few bucks short, COME JOIN US IN THE SCRAPPY TRIP ALONG!

Scrappy Trip Along so far

It's absolutely the perfect project to get your mojo back after a couple of weeks off. No thinking is required, you basically can't fuff it up, and they're such easy blocks you can do them in your sleep. Trust me. The whole time I was away I was dreaming about it (and pining for my sewing machine).

The tutorial can be found here: http://quiltville.com/scrappytrips.shtml

It all started with Brenda and Megan getting their cool on. And theirs, which you can see here and here, are still 2 of my favourites. Then Rita and Katy and Megan and Emily and Lorena and Audrie and Trudi and a whole bunch of other people. I just LOVE how different everyone's looks.

This right here should be a selection of pictures from the pool on instagram. It should refresh each time a new one is added. Cool huh?! To follow along with us, just instagram a pic with the hashtag #scrappytripalong, or come and join the flickr group. And of course, you can click through to each picture to see who's is who's!

I made 13 blocks last night (in a couple of hours.... yes it's that quick!), which brought my total up to 25. I'm definitely going up to 36, but may in fact go bigger. Or I might just make a second one.

The colours are probably closest in the first pic up there, I'm battling poor light with only having taking pictures on my phone. Sorry! But with any luck, I'll have a finished top by the weekend. I'm thinking of straight line quilting through each of the squares on the diagonal.

Somebody persuade me that's a bad idea... please?!

  1. Happy New Year! I can't believe I got sucked into the scrappytripalong too. I'm planning on simply making a cushion but I'm not sure that is possible :-)
Yours is gorgeous, love the colours.

  2. Sucked in! But this is fabulous, I love the look of them every time i see another one pop up on a blog, and i couldn't possibly stand in the way of your creative aspirations, if you want straight line diagonal quilting, you go for it! : )

  3. I haven't started yet, but it's all I've thought about for the last few days. Once my New Year visitors have gone home today, I know exactly what I'll be doing!

  4. I was about to email you to see if you are still alive. Glad you had a good holiday. Apparently you are the only one who escaped the germs. And I think you should do the straight line quilting - mostly because I want to find out if you can hear swearing all the way from your place to mine.

  5. Happy new year! Loving your scrappy trip and I so want to make one too but I am one of the germy folk Susan is talking about and am too sick to sew!!!
Straight line quilting will be lovely :)

  6. Love your quilt! I'm thinking of starting one after seeing how easy it is to get gorgeous results! I say 'go for it' diagonal straight line quilting will be beautiful...that's what I'll probably do if I get a quilt made!

  8. I love your blocks, the colours work so nicely together. I have one thing to finish and then I can do these too. I would actually recommend straight lines up and down, as if you emphasize one diagonal it will be odd and doing two diagonals (like an X) will take forever and isn't the point that this is to be fast and fun. Or a big concentric circle quilting might be fun too. A stipple or other overall pattern would also work so nicely with these blocks. hose are my thoughts anyway.

  9. It looks fantastic! This will definitely be on my wish list for 2013, although maybe some time after everyone else as I must get other bits done first

  10. I love it! In fact, I love all of the quilts/blocks and have been trying to keep up with them all on Twitter, now I can just come here and see the latest photos!! Enjoy making the rest of the blocks!

  11. I love it!! I will definitely try this pattern. Thank you for bring it to my attention. I like to straight line quilt with my walking foot.
For this one, I'd probably do vertical and horizontal lines quilting in the ditch starting with every other block to see how that looks. Then every block if I felt it need to be quilted more densely. This method should make the individual blocks of color pop placing attention on the fabrics and colors.
    Just my humble opinion.

  13. Gorgeous, gorgeous! Oh how tempting this Scrappy Trip Along is. I thought I was immune but repeated exposure to lovely pics on various blogs and constantly hearing how easy it is is shattering my will power. Good job I'm still lurgy-loaded as that'll clinch it and stop me from overcommitting, but maybe when I'm better ....

  14. Looking good. I'm avoiding being tempted...for now!

  15. Happy new year and all that jazz.
I am going 36 - otherwise I will never be able to quilt the bugger!

  16. It looks fab, though I'm holding off for now... Yeah, going diagonal through every square will drive you insane, don't do it! Maybe every 2nd one or something? Or alternate 2 and 3 or a random mix of 1, 2 and 3?

  17. I don't know if I can convince you that quilting straight lines is a bad idea.... because that's what I was thinking too as I made my blocks!

  18. Quilt every other or every rid, you'll go mad otherwise! And your wrists will thank you :)

  19. Oh these are gorgeous! I'm so tempted but I think I'll drool and applaud from the sidelines on this one! If I get the chance to join in unofficially I will! Great to have you back! Jxo

  20. Your colours are gorgeous. I'm tempted to join but I wouldn't follow through and finish so I'll admire everyone else's. is the top picture the village where you live or visited? Oh, it's just so English, like a post card, or what we see on tv. I'm Australian. My family all emigrated from Britain, about 100 years ago, and many have gone back to meet distant relatives etcd, but I never have. Too busy studying working and having kids!

  24. Have you noticed Laura that Bonnie has now picked up on this trend and has featured your quilt on her blog!

    http://quiltville.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/scrappy-trip-along-with-flickr.html

What goes around comes around - she also wants to know how to get into Instagram...and I can't help her...

  25. Wow Laura! Linked over from Quiltville. I joined flickr, of course!! It teaches me to learn technology so I can see what others are working on. I'm ready to dig into my scrap drawers I organized over Christmas break. I love utilizing Bonnie's Scrap User's System. I even have friends cutting strips for me when I return their quilts that I've longarmed to them. When they bring their next quilt, they drop off a bag "for the scrap drawers" LOL!!! Here I go to take the plunge in ANOTHER Bonnie project. Thank you for your inspiring quilt Laura!! Hugs, Allison in Plano TX USA http://longarmingintx.blogspot.com
