Or pillows, or whatever it is that we're calling them these days. I get so confused!
Last night I whipped up these 2 cushion covers in a little over half an hour. They're not quilted or anything, but with this gorgeous canvas weight print (Moda's Odds and Ends), they don't need to be.
I love the scale of this print. I picked up a little of it in the quilting weight cotton last year at Sewing Summit, which is cute and definitely more suited to blocks and quilts etc. But I just LOVE this larger scale which I got this week from Pin it and Stitch.
The texture on the canvas is really lovely too. You can see it, and my poorly poked-out corners, in this picture. That reminds me... must poke out those corners a bit more tonight!
It's perfect for bags, pouches and of course pillows.
This was my first time trying to put invisible zip into anything. I followed the advice on this tutorial and it was pretty simple. I would say though, the whole measuring, marking, and matching the points kinda bamboozled me. It was mostly my fault, for using a different sized zipper and pillow form but if you have any experience with zippers at all, I would just ignore all the measuring stuff and simply centre the zipper in the middle of your fabric. When you come to sew the second side of the zipper, just match up the edges of your pillow front and back. Seems somewhat easier to me!
I will also say, I gained new respect for my zipper foot with this project. I've always thought they were a bit useless, and more of a hindrance than a help. Especially with the one for my Janome (less so on my old machine, a Brother). But when I came to sew the invisible zip I noticed a tiny little ledge on each side of the foot, which slotted perfectly over the zipper teeth and enabled me to get a perfect seam. Winner!
I will definitely be making these kind of cushion covers again... with just a yard of fabric, 2 zippers, and half an hour I made something which makes me incredibly happy. Of course... that might be somewhat down to the little "Happy thoughts" in the print. "Eat more chocolate" resonates with me at the moment ;o)

Those are great pillows - that is what we call them in Canada anyway. I learned to do an invisible zipper last week, I used the tutorial at Sew Katie Did - you might find it more in line with your approach.
ReplyDeleteLovely pillows in the US :)) They really play nicely together and I love the hardly visible red zipper (I only noticed the zipper pull)!
ReplyDeleteSometimes the simplest ideas are so effective.
ReplyDeleteReally lovely cushions lauli x

ReplyDeleteEasy - when you know how! Well done Laura! Room for a few more on the sofa I think!
ReplyDeleteThese look fab, I had been stroking my computer screen when I saw these prints in their shop at Christmas time, and a great use for the fabrics, makes the sofa a much cheerier place to be, with such great advice! : )
ReplyDeleteThey are lovely cushions and love the heavier weight too. I'm going to look at my zipper foot...why does noone tell you these things!
ReplyDeletePoking out corners for your evening's entertainment. Hmmmmm! Lovely pillows/cushions though. I like chocolate messages. Makes me feel I am just doing the right thing.
ReplyDeleteThe CUSHIONS are lovely; pillow-schmillow, they're for bedtime!
ReplyDeletePillow, cushions, whatever... They are gorgeous and your zips are perfect!
ReplyDeleteLove that print, looks fab as cushions!
ReplyDeleteLove that fabric! And well done on gaining new respect for the old zipper foot! Jxo
ReplyDeleteFreaking awesome Lauli! What a smarty pants! I've always been terrified of invisible zippers, but these may actually change my mind. Think I may "need" some of that cool fabric ;-) xx
ReplyDeleteI am patiently(ahem) awaiting my order of the canvas weight fabic in the mail right now! I loved the cotton weight version and decided I wanted some of the canvas weight. I want to recover the cushion in an old chair I have and make a matching pillow for the sofa! I hope turn out as nice as yours!
ReplyDeleteI love a quick project to make in the middle of a big one. These cushions are great.
ReplyDeleteLove this, Laura. Also, the fabric is new-to-me, and while I normally don't love inspirational text fabric, these phrases are right up my alley right now!!
